He does not want our motivation to be the possibility that others will praise us for how "spiritual" we are. But His instruction also has a practical element. In Jesus' day, being outside was the norm. Familiar faces and constant activity surrounded everyone. In today's world, we spend a lot more time indoors, often tied to technology.
