An angel asked Joseph to take a big step of faith. Trust can be difficult. Trusting God in the unknown may be the greatest testament of faith that one can offer. This action strengthens our faith as we see God work in uncertainty. Life is full of ups and downs. When we lean on our own understanding, we often fall short and fall further away from God. Even if it is impossible to understand the situation, our calling is to respond with faith. An example of a hardship such as the loss of a job or financial security can challenge our trust. Author and speaker Priscilla Shirer talks about a couple that faced this very thing.

God called this couple to step out of their comfort zone to do ministry in a nearby trailer park. Their faith is on display as they respond to God. The Bible contains many stories of people uncertain about where God is leading them. Hebrews 11 reveals men and women called to put their confidence and hope in God. They often took difficult steps where they they could not see what was next. In a similar way, Joseph showed faith in God's plan. He learned that Mary was pregnant - a situation that often resulted in disgrace. Yet he showed faith in God by accepting this responsibility and stayed committed to her.

Matthew 1:19-23

And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Romans 8:28

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
