Shortly after giving the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus and the disciples begin to take a boat to the other side of the lake. From Mark chapter 4 we learn that Jesus was asleep in the back of the boat as the big storm hit. The disciples became frantic, fearing that they were about to drown. The Covid-19 Coronavirus may have you in a similar state of fear. Steve Douglass describes what that fear may be like.

This perspective from Isaiah is so comforting. We see this three-part perspective applied in this story when Jesus calms the storm. In their fear, the disciples woke Jesus up (presence). And what did he do? He rebuked the storm (power) and said to the water, "Quiet down! (practical help)." When we equate the storm to the Coronavirus, the water that needs quieting is the turmoil around us. We need to cry out to Jesus to calm this storm and still our waters. This Biblical encounter with Jesus ends with the disciples seeing Jesus in a new way. They said, "Who is this man that even the wind and waves obey Him?" May we experience the same awe as we turn over our fears to Jesus.

Isaiah 41:10

fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Mark 4:35-41

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
