In Acts 13, the Holy Spirit led the church at Antioch to fast and pray. They were seeking God’s direction for their ministry and church with a time of fasting. The Holy Spirit answered their prayers by saying “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” The church leaders expressed their desire for God's leading through a fast. The hunger of their stomach was a reflection of the hunger in their hearts. Listen as David Platt talks about how the Acts 13 model of fasting has shaped his church.

If we were to survey all believers everywhere and ask, “Do you want to know God’s will for your time here on earth?” It is safe to assume the answer would be a resounding yes. God never withholds anything that His children need. There is a definite tie between worship, prayer, and fasting, and guidance from the Holy Spirit. The fast from the Antioch church helped spark a world-changing missions movement. Imagine what God can do if you band together with other believers to fast and seek God’s will for life.
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
